This program is created for people who want more than a handful of songs or random tutorials. It's for beginner and intermediate players who are ready for a clear, supportive path to becoming confident, expressive tongue drum players. Whether your drum was a recent purchase or it's been sitting on a shelf waiting to be played, this course will help you build the skills and confidence to truly enjoy making music.
You own a tongue drum and want to get more out of it
You've learned a few basics but aren't sure what to practice next
You find yourself playing the same patterns over and over
You'd enjoy learning in a friendly, encouraging environment with others on the same journey
You want to feel confident playing for yourself, family, or friends
Why now?
Most tongue drum players learn a few patterns, a few songs, and then aren't quite sure where to go next. Over the last several years I've been building a deeper approach to rhythm, improvisation, meditation, and musical confidence. I'm creating a new Live Master Course that brings all of these pieces together into one guided path. I'd love for your to join me.
Instead of guessing what lesson to watch next, each week builds naturally on the last.

A Proven Teaching Approach

Alexandra Ray
Hi, I'm Alex, the founder of Root Rhythm.
For the past several years, I've been helping beginners discover just how approachable and rewarding the tongue drum can be. Through my YouTube lessons, I've taught thousands of students around the world, and I've noticed something again and again: most people don't struggle because they lack musical ability—they struggle because they don't have a clear path to follow.
I've been playing drums for more than 20 years, with a passion for world percussion, rhythm, and mindful music-making. Today, I combine that experience with a teaching style that's simple, encouraging, and designed specifically for beginner to advanced drummers.
My goal is to help you move beyond memorizing a few patterns and give you the confidence to sit down with your tongue drum and simply enjoy making music.
FAQ
Do I need a tongue drum to take this course?
Yes. You'll need your own tongue drum and internet connection to participate. While some of the musical concepts can be applied to other percussion instruments, the lessons are designed specifically for the tongue drum, and you'll get the most value by practicing on your own instrument throughout the course.
Will this course work with my tongue drum?
Yes. The teaching method I use for this course is designed to work with almost any tongue drum, regardless of brand or scale. The techniques and musical concepts can be adapted to different layouts, so you can follow along even if your drum looks different from the one used in class.
Is this course for beginners?
Yes. This course is designed for beginners and advancing students who want more than a collection of random YouTube lessons. If you know how to strike the drum and are ready to build real confidence, you'll fit right in. We'll progress step by step, with each lesson building naturally on the last.
Do I need to take the Tongue Drum Basics and Beyond The Basics Course before taking this one?
No. The Tongue Drum Master Course is a complete learning path, so it's not necessary to complete my other courses first. If you've already taken Tongue Drum Basics or Beyond the Basics, you'll recognize some familiar techniques, but everything you need is taught within this course and includes new lessons that aren't in my other 2 Basics Courses.
What will I learn?
Over 7 weeks, you'll build the skills to play with confidence and expression. We'll cover technique, rhythm, musicality, improvisation, and practical ways to create music that feels natural and enjoyable. By the end of the course, you'll have a clear framework for sitting down with your drum and simply playing—not wondering what to practice next.
Is this a live course?
Yes. We'll meet live each Tuesday from 7:30-8:30PM Central Time on Zoom for 7 weeks, where you'll receive guided instruction, demonstrations, and the opportunity to ask questions. If you can't attend a live session (or you'd simply like to revisit a lesson) the recordings will be available inside your course lesson page so you can learn at your own pace.
Is this course focused on songs or improvisation?
You'll learn both. We'll build a strong foundation in technique and rhythm while also exploring improvisation and musical ideas that help you feel comfortable creating your own music.
How much should I practice each week?
During this course I will suggest an exercise to work on each week leading up to the next class. I recommend setting aside just a few consistent practice sessions each week (5-15 mins) to help make steady progress.
Will I be able to ask questions?
Yes. Each live session includes time for questions, and you'll also be part of a private Facebook community where you can ask questions, share your progress, and connect with other students throughout the course.
If you've been waiting for the right time to truly learn your tongue drum, I'd love to have you join me over these 7 weeks!
